Day 3: Stay Humble

Passage: James 1:9-11
Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

Have you ever thought that material successes were equal to blessings from God? This is a theme among many believers, though it is never mentioned in Scripture. James actually teaches us here that it’s the opposite! Whether we live our lives in abundance or in need, our circumstances are temporary. The bottom line is that anything that we achieve on a worldly front, whether that is material wealth or personal success, is absolutely nothing compared to the eternal riches found in Christ. James reminds us to remain humble and boast only in what God has done for us. Fasting can help us shift our focus from earthly distractions to the eternal. Take some time today to remember that true worth comes from being a child of God, not from any status or possessions.

  1. How do you find contentment in your current circumstances?

  2. What earthly things might be distracting you from your relationship with God?

  3. How can fasting help you focus on eternal treasures?
